The Theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress #IWD2024
1 out of every 5 board members in Indian companies is a woman. 10 years ago, this number was 1 in 20.
The Companies Act, 2013 mandates every listed company in India fulfilling certain conditions to have at least 1 woman director appointed on their board.
While ~45% of the Nifty-500 companies have just 1 woman director to comply with the law, there are a few companies like Zomato and Apollo hospitals where women constitute more than 50% of the members of the board of directors.
57% of the directors on Zomato’s board consist of women, while 55% on Hindustan Zinc and Cummins India, 54% on Apollo Hospitals, and 50% on Nestle India are the leading companies with the highest number of women on their board.
Traditionally led by men, women bring a fresh perspective to any company’s board and positively impact an organisation’s performance. Gender-balanced boardrooms are 20% more likely to improve business outcomes.
With time, women’s participation in boardrooms goes up and so does an organisation’s impact on its own business and society in general.
