Your IIT/IIM tag will not get you a job a few years down the line.

As the competition as well as quality of candidates go up, relying on the traditional method of hiring basis “degree and pedigree” would mean letting go of a good chunk of highly talented and talented candidates. It would mean a missed opportunity for the organisation.

The shift is undergoing where competence and skills are valued over educational credentials which opens doors for a more diverse and dynamic workforce and for an organisation which remains stuck to their traditional norms will face challenges in recruiting quality candidates.

Apparently, hiring for skills is significantly more predictive of job performance than focusing on education or work experience, it’s not just my individual opinion but even research suggests the same.

In the future workforce, we need diversity beyond degrees. Creating inclusive cultures involves challenging traditional mindsets, avoiding unconscious biases, and setting targets for alternative skill pathways. The goal is to build a workforce that reflects a spectrum of educational and career backgrounds.

The journey towards skills-based hiring is not just a recruitment strategy for the next gen of workforce—it’s a transformative HR approach.
