Women in board leadership are not just participants; they are change-makers poised to drive progress and innovation.

Having served on boards for many years, I’ve learned a few key lessons about making an impact and finding your place in the room as a women.

Board leadership is both a privilege and a responsibility, requiring patience, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning.

Here are my 2 cents:

1. Be Proud of Your Selection
Being invited to join a board means you’ve distinguished yourself. Embrace this achievement and prepare to make your mark.

2. Observe and Note
Use your first few meetings to gauge dynamics and relationships. Take meticulous notes—these will be invaluable in understanding the board’s culture and how you can contribute most effectively.

3. Avoid Playing the Victim
Boardrooms can be tough, but adopting a victim mentality will only hold you back. Focus on finding solutions and stay proactive, even when faced with challenges.

4. Stay Calm and Reflective
Don’t react impulsively. Take the time to think through the issues at hand. A thoughtful, considered approach often leads to better outcomes.

5. Seek Mentorship
Find a mentor who’s been there before. Their insights and feedback can be critical to helping you navigate the nuances of board leadership.

6. Change Takes Time
If you encounter outdated mindsets or an “old boys’ club” atmosphere, don’t lose heart. Real change is possible, but it requires persistence and patience.

Whether you’re helping guide strategic decisions or breaking through old norms, the key is to stay focused, seek growth, and lead with integrity.

Positive change is always possible with the right mindset.
