A 27-year-old Axis Bank exec just took her own life due to workplace harassment.
She was called words like ‘Divorcee’ and ‘Bandariya’ by her colleagues and had to bear the weight of these insults.
I hate to say this,
But as leaders this is on us.
Our “anti-harassment” efforts are clearly failing.
And “Inclusive cultures” are meaningless if such abuse can occur.
It’s time for a fundamental shift:
1. Zero tolerance means ZERO. Not a slap on the wrist or “we’ll look into it.”
2. Harassment training isn’t a formality. It’s about creating a safe space, and understanding the gravity of words.
3. Company culture is about respect. Another “investigating” statement won’t suffice. We need concrete action plans. We need to create safe spaces for reporting.
To the Harassers, I want to say,
Your words have power. They can destroy lives. Think about the weight of your “jokes” now.
And dear bystanders,
Silence is complicity. Speak up. Report inappropriate behavior. You have the power to prevent a tragedy.
A life is lost and a family is shattered.
It’s high time now.
Anybody who is facing harassment,
You are not alone. We failed you, but we’re listening now. Please reach out.
